Poston was definitely a second banana par excellence, one who could show off the star's talent and frequently steal a scene to wonderful effect. In the clips above, you'll see him taking a few different roles, but mostly he had two types of characters on Steve's show (both of whom would occasionally elicit Steve's infectiously weird, high-pitched laugh): bumblers and drunks. The drunks were his own creation (a sort of failed seedy playboy meets the standard sloppy souse that so many comedians did), but the bumbler was his own Midwest American variation on one of the greatest comics of all time, Stan Laurel. With that in mind, I close this montage of clips from the Steve show (btw, the blonde is Sabrina, a British pin-up/actress who never quite took off over here) with Poston doing Laurel to Chuck McCann's Hardy in a wonderful, and quite lengthy recreation of "The Boys" on Steve Allen's Show (airdate January 14, 1959).
