St. Bonaventure wins A-10 glory in Atlantic City… Andrew Nicholson climbed a ladder with scissors in (More) Andrew Nicholson climbed a ladder with scissors in hand and thousands of fans chanting "SBU!"
Truly, a unique experience for the 6-foot-9 St. Bonaventure center because for as long as he had been at the Olean, N.Y., school, the Bonnies were not winners.
In one day, Nicholson and his teammates changed that stigma and uplifted a fan base struggling to find itself. Nicholson had another monster game as fourth-seeded St. Bonaventure beat No. 3 Xavier 67-56 to get its 20th win of the season and capture the Atlantic 10 Conference men's basketball tournament title at Boardwalk Hall in front of 6,101 fans.
The Bonnies earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I tournament, bursting some team's bubble, and provided a riveting ending to the A-10 tournament's six-year run in Atlantic City.
"They have no idea what they've done," St. Bonaventure coach Mark Schmidt said. "They know they won a game and it will sink in when they see their name across the board. But in terms of what this means to the university? They have no idea."
In 2003, it was discovered that a junior-college transfer on the Bonnies only had a welding certificate, not the valid degree needed to be considered legitimate transfer. St. Bonaventure was hit with sanctions and when Schmidt took over as coach in 2007 his job was to rebuild the program.
That comeback is complete. The Bonnies are going to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2000.
"I don't really know what happened before I got here," said Nicholson, who was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. "Coach Schmidt recruited me and said, 'You are a special player.' I wanted to go to a school where I could make a difference."
Nicholson's presence was overwhelming against Xavier. He finished with 26 points, 14 rebounds and an A-10 championship game-record eight blocks.
Xavier coach Chris Mack said he's only seen a performance like that on television.
"I haven't seen that on the sidelines," Mack said. "He's an NBA player. He's a pro. He's a poor man's Tim Duncan. He's by far the best player in the league."
Schmidt said he got goose bumps the first time he saw Nicholson play at his Ontario high school.
"I saw this gangly 180-pound kid walking out of the locker room and I said, 'That's him?' " Schmidt said. "But then I saw him play. We knew he was going to be good. We just didn't know how good."
St. Bonaventure jumped all over Xavier in the first half, at one point holding the Musketeers to 4-for-18 shooting. Xavier was 0-for-7 on 3-pointers in the first half and went into halftime trailing 37-24.
The Bonnies built that lead to 17 points early in the second half, going up 41-24 with 18 minutes, 23 seconds left.
But St. Bonaventure almost gave it all back as Xavier made its run.
"We've been able to climb out of holes like that all season," Xavier senior Kenny Frease said. "We sort of made a habit out of it, being down early in games. I didn't think when we were down 17 or 10, we never counted ourselves out of the game."
Every time the Musketeers got close, Nicholson seemed to do something to demoralize them.
The first time Xavier cut the score to six after their big deficit, Nicholson hit two free throws. Then, on the Bonnies' next possession, he grabbed an offensive rebound and dunked, getting nearly all of the Bonnies' fans screaming and on their feet.
"He's the best player I've had as a head coach," Schmidt said. "He's everything for us. That's Andrew. He just plays. There are not enough words to describe what he is, what he means to our program and what he means to me."
With 10:03 to go, Xavier freshman Dezmine Wells hit a layup and the ensuing foul shot to cut the deficit to 45-41.
However, Nicholson and junior Demetrius Conger combined to score the next nine points, with Nicholson going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line, to keep Xavier from completing the comeback. Sophomore Charlon Kloof's layup with 3:35 left made it 56-48 and the Musketeers got no closer than six the rest of the way.
"I never imagined this," Kloof said. "I always knew that if you work hard, you'll get rewarded and this reward is greater than I imagined."

St. Bonaventure in NCAAs for 1st time since 2000 With 30 seconds to play in the Atlantic 10 (More) With 30 seconds to play in the Atlantic 10 Conference title game and victory assured, the reality of going to the NCAA tournament set in for St. Bonaventure.
The players on the court smiled and hugged. Coach Mark Schmidt walked down his bench and congratulated everyone. The brown-clad fans in a roughly half-filled old arena in this casino resort clapped and cheered louder with each passing second.
A dozen years after its last NCAA bid and nine seasons after an embarrassing scandal, little St. Bonaventure (20-11) is back in college basketball's show after beating Xavier 67-56 in the title game behind conference Player of the Year Andrew Nicholson's 26 points, 14 rebounds and eight blocked shots.
"This is a great moment for the program and for the school," said Schmidt, who has turned things around in five seasons. "From where we have come it's been a long hard battle. A lot of times, you work and you work and you work and you still don't have success. But someone is looking over us, and I told the guys in the locker room, we worked and worked and worked and got lucky. We had success."
This is a rebirth for St. Bonaventure, whose program was embarrassed in 2003 for using an illegal player and then allowing its players to boycott the final two regular season games after the conference suspended the player. (Less)
