Gingerbread Goe
MERRY CHRISTMAS YOUTUBERS!!! Seeing Santa in his giant snow globe at the mall and all the holiday (More) MERRY CHRISTMAS YOUTUBERS!!! Seeing Santa in his giant snow globe at the mall and all the holiday decorations out for over a month now I feel like this Merry Christmas wish is long overdue. But, yeah, better late than never. I know youtubers don't like to wait but it's hard to keep up with everything now operating at internet speed. You'd have to be, uh, like Santa to get it all done. Plus, I would have uploaded this when we made it but youtube didn't even exist until FEB '05 and this claymation we made in 2003. My son and I put our names in and luckily got chosen to be in this claymation club at school. When we heard the good news we also learned the class wouldn't start for a while. He was so excited. I was excited. But, the class was weeks off. Antsy to get going, we grabbed some Play-doh, a digicam, a tripod, a set (his milk carton gingerbread house and a snowflake and small Christmas tree lying around) and props (candy left over from decorating Halloween pumpkin cookies). We also rummaged around a junk drawer for some gratuitous sound Fx and video bling. Plus there was this magic voice-"talent" hat blowing around that we wrestled to the ground and placed on the closest head to bring Goe to life. There was no script, no storyboard, no story, no budget, no nothing. We just wanted to see how a claymation movie might look with Play-doh instead of clay and a still camera instead of a movie camera. We had the time and patience to take 51 shots I think. That's all there is I believe in this entire movie. Since then, I learned that Dr. Suess was challenged to write a book with only 50 words and he did--Green Eggs & Ham--our favorite since Sam We Am. Also to experiment, we added a soundtrack from a CD I have that gets a lot of mileage at Christmas. The classic Rudolph music from that other little stop-motion animation we love to watch every year. This little test footage was shown to the claymation club teacher and wound up being shown to everyone in the elementary school, K thru 5th grade. Four years later I still hear kids bring up Gingerbread Goe (pronounced Joe). It's funny considering how random and crude the whole experiment was. With youtube, we can now broadcast this to other elementary schoolers and Kindergartners at heart around the globe who might like a peek into this magical world. Gingerbread Goe is a mythical fairyland creature inhabiting a world of candies and treats and his only worry is that one day he'll let his guard down and get taken out by a stray gumdrop or something. It's A Sweet Life. If you've seen It's A Wonderful Life or Shrek or played Candyland, they are obviously thinly veiled rip-offs of this timeless masterpiece. ;) We ended up putting together a more elaborate music teaching video which we plan to post as well but primitive lil' Gingerbread Goe will always occupy a tiny, sweet corner of our hearts. So, we are enlisting Goe to send you a little holiday cheer this year and give you a little something to smile about when you are power shopping for the next month (or Dec 24th) or standing in that big line of Santa lap-sitters in your mall. Catch Goe if you can! Enjoy and have a sweet, if somewhat belated, Christmas! (Less)
