T.Rex 'Laser Love' live version Hey Cats
Recorded at Wimbledon Theatre London on 13th July 1976 and broadcast on ITV on the 28th (More) Hey Cats
Recorded at Wimbledon Theatre London on 13th July 1976 and broadcast on ITV on the 28th August 1976 'Rollin' Bolan' was a 5 song special program featuring T.Rex.
Teen Glam Rock fans had now become Pub Rockers with new heroes such as Dr.Feelgood and Eddie and The Hot Rods.
On the same weekend as the transmission Gong, Rory Gallager, and Osibisa headlined the Reading Festival.
But if you were watching ITV this is what you saw...............
What is first striking is that Marc, who having achieved so much already was still only 28. He has his hair cut short and is wearing a white short sleeved jacket with a black T-shirt and a tie, in exactly the same style as worn by The New York Dolls, Television, Talking Heads, Blondie, Elvis Costello, Tom Robinson etc. in the following year 1977!
Chartwise 'I Love To Boogie' a simplistic 12 bar tribute to 50's rock 'n' roll had been Marc's biggest hit for some time peaking at No.13 in June '76.
There is a great TOTP performance of this on youtube again showing Marc's new short hairstyle but make sure you avoid the one that mixes the short haired Marc with early 70's Glam version!
Although this follow up single only managed to peak at No. 41 in Oct '76 This live version really stands out as ahead of it's time. Marc has added a second guitar player in Miller Anderson which really powers up the sound, Steve Currie is still on bass with Davey Lutton on drums and Dino Dines on keyboards.
This song could easily have been written by any of the new bands mentioned above and been on their first albums in 1977's New Wave.
To follow was T.Rex's 1977 tour with The Dammed supporting and Marc's now legendary Granada TV shows, so there is no question great new music completely different to his first run of hits was to come.
But alas that was not to be.
So please remember Marc this way............ a 28 year old on the crest of the New Wave!
This video is taken from the DVD collection T.Rex on TV where you will find all 5 songs.
Keep a little Marc in your heart!
