A Kansas City teenager faces up to 60 years in prison after a jury found him guilty Thursday of (More) A Kansas City teenager faces up to 60 years in prison after a jury found him guilty Thursday of sodomizing a 10-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy. Andrew M. Sapien, 19, was convicted of two counts of first-degree statutory sodomy following a three-day jury trial in Platte County Circuit Court. Sapien was 16 when he abused the two children. He was certified to stand trial as an adult, after having earlier been found guilty in juvenile court of sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl when he was 15. "I don't know whether this young man doesn't want to stop, or can't stop himself," Platte County Prosecutor Eric Zahnd said. Prosecutors proved at trial that Sapien sexually abused the two children in November and December 2004. The victims testified that prior to sodomizing them, Sapien showed them pictures of pornography on a computer, including cartoons. Testimony from a forensic computer examiner revealed pornography on a computer Sapien accessed, including files showing Dennis the Menace, SpongeBob SquarePants, Homer Simpson and other characters involved in sexual conduct. Prosecutors said Sapien used the cartoon images to convince the children that sex is OK. "He did this because he knew kids liked cartoon characters," Zahnd said. Zahnd said in addition to the animation, Sapien also showed the children traditional pornography. The children testified at trial that they did not immediately tell anyone of the abuse because they were afraid of Sapien. The female victim later told an older sibling, who reported the abuse. The jury recommended Sapien be sentenced to 30 years in prison on each count. Judge Abe Shafer increased Sapien's bond to $200,000 cash only following the verdicts. "Nobody relishes throwing a young man who was 16 when he committed these crimes, locking him away and throwing away the key for the rest of their lives -- that's a difficult thing.," Zahnd said. Sapien is currently being held in the Platte County jail. His sentencing is scheduled for March 20. (Less)
