New Police Siren: What's That Shaking My Ride? The Rumbler! Alexandria police are turning to a new weapon to grab the attention of distracted drivers and (More) Alexandria police are turning to a new weapon to grab the attention of distracted drivers and pedestrians Fearing accidents, they're buying to a noisemaker unavailable to the average commuter. It's the new Rumbler siren and it's tough to ingnore. Two woofers create such intense low frequency sound waves, police say you cannot just hear, but feel them from 300 feet away -- even inside your car with your stereo blasting. "Yes, that's real loud. Loud enough for me to get out of the way," says a woman passing by while police demonstate it. Alexandria is testing two of the Rumblers. DC police have 49 of them. The department is planning to equip all 767 marked patrol cars -- at $350 a piece. "This does exactly what we want a siren to do," says Alexandria Police Sgt Mitch Grossman. "Makes everyone look. Hopefully makes everyone stop. So we can all be safe driving through." The Rumbler produces a loud low frequency soundwave that you can actually feel if you're inside a car or outside. The idea is if you're listening to loud music in the car, it's intense enough for you to feel it. In a test, this reporter could hear it quite clearly, but I could feel it, even though I was in a car right in front of the police vehicle, with the windows rolled down. But if you put a few coins on the hood of the police car, and you can see them shake. The Rumbler is supposed to rumble just briefly -- eight or ten seconds, which is probably good. Some bloggers are already complaining it will spoil whatever sleep you can get in the heart of the city. Remember the scene in the Woody Allen movie where he can't sleep in a country house because the crickets are no where near as soothing to him as a nice police siren? It's not clear even Woody Allen could sleep through the Rumbler. DC Police say they are also planning to replace the light bars on top of their patrol cars. Instead of the flashing lights that have some people thinking they're in trouble, the new bars will be able to hold a steady blue, increasing visibility without scaring drivers. The new light bars will cost $1,800 a piece. (Less)
