(The Mystery Of) The Mystery Dance
I want to tell you about the mystery dance. This was (and still is) intended to be the last of my (More) I want to tell you about the mystery dance. This was (and still is) intended to be the last of my experiments of maximizing the result from the most restricting and minimal sets of materials and tools. In fact, this is the most minimal ever, running the music through a program called Audio Hijack in an unregistered demo version, adding in and manipulating effects while doing so and recording the result live. The images were all from one set of shots, taken at the end of the night on a slow Friday at the night club Ruin (ladead.com). It was one of the first outings with the new Lumix LX3, which is capable of amazing things in low light capacities. This night, however, I was simply working with one, limited set of camera settings, fascinated by two things, the first was the atmospherically mysterious, spectral qualities of the images shot under the given conditions (an extremely sparsely populated dance floor with practically no measurable light over most of the area most of the time), and my concentration on only one subject the whole time, with whom I had an incomprehensible fascination for reasons I just couldn't understand, there was something I saw in her but couldn't see outside, and kept shooting for an answer, but never hit on it, every time, finding myself shooting through, without a single defining frame. It seemed a natural idea that if there were a literal example of "the mystery dance", that that was it. In composing the synthesis of the song and images randomly drawn from the sequence, I arranged a basic slideshow, and manipulated only two parameters, the motion of view over the area of each image (most images beng repeated ssssssssssssssssssssseeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeel times in succession with diferent spans of the picture area covered over different lengths of time, producing different effects, ad applying different darkroom processes to the photos, sometimes a slightly altered process applied progressively over several repetitions of the sae image in succession, sometimes random variations scattered, and other experiments. But that was it. Track - The Mystery Dance, by Elvis Costello Additional reprocessing by me, for several reasons, related to the of the trans morphism between the meanings and interpretations of the lyrics and the effects of the photo montage. subjective drivel - It's odd, sitting here writing, typing, making an attempt to describe, the uncanny, held-in-the-grip-of-fate-feeling I have now, and have never before had any such experience of, but know it by name, the merging of two distinctly individual insights, which never the less are entirely my own and manifestly the same, yet they only became so just now. Previously it was not even known that they were two whole halves of one comprehensive realization, that is - providence. I have heard and held a great appreciation for this song over many years. I always had gaged strong allegorical inferences from it, and was always all the more entertained, especially never having any notion that the allegories which I suspected were implied in the lyrics could be actually possible. Then, after a long period of being torn away from the most essential of feelings, unaware of the fact that this process of disconnection was occurring, distracted too much by the relentless inner feeling of volatile, thrashing, twisting, wrenching discomfort, horror, fear, turmoil, confusion, desperation, suffering from sets of symptoms that had no parameters by which they could even be distinguished or recognized as symptoms of anything, at least not by me. The most urgent priority of every day of my life was the quest for ways to describe what I was feeling, and to make matters worse, what I was undergoing was not only an assault on my feelings and emotions, but on my very thinking capacity. One by one, slowly I was able to categorically isolate general areas of symptoms, there were different groups that seemed linked in particular to each-other, and investigating the conditions I could find, that I could think of words to key into with, investing all efforts I was capable of in getting within the vicinity of conditions which came so close to correct diagnosis, but were always short in one critical way or another. But it provided a potential starting guide for treatment options. And eventually led to finding effective combinations that could keep the insufferable symptoms suppressed. In the wake of my relief, it was some time before I noticed that . . . I was missing . . . I was missing myself, or my feeling of my self, or, I didn't know what, and I was missing feelings, motivational impulses, desire, want, interest, pleasure, and it was not for lack of trying. I tried to return to everything I could think of that I liked doing, but it was only effort, no result. I was always shy in public about dancing, just a weird quirk that carried over from childhood, but at home by myself, heh, yeah, I actually would dance around naked when I was digging some particular groove I had going or what not. But I couldn't anymore, there was not feeling that connected what I heard with any inspiration to move. And it didn't stop there. There was no connection between my most enthusiastic passion of a physical nature, no desire, no sex, no interest, and as time wore on, I realized I'd forgotten the feelings and hence, what to do. The feelings were the guide, the instruction, the chemistry could no be without any remaining memory of the experience of it when i used to feel it, and trying to regain the knowledge by going through all of the other possible actions led to something even worse than finding nothing along any of that paths that should lead to desires. I found the paths were all the same, and could be just as easily described as leading to nothing as just leading endlessly with only the knowledge that there would be nothing to find, and that the consistency of traveling every path of every . . . any . . . way that should lead to something, and only exhausting myself to arrive at nothing was embedding patterns of aversion, and recognition patterns of negative associations . . . and that quixotical 'thing' that was so enjoyable in that it was impossible to imagine how what people will eventually learn though the experiences of their own feelings, and being that feeling and experience were inexorably linked, even if you had amnesia, the feeling that draws us toward the learning of what we want, if nothing else, would be the omnipresent, fundamental teacher. But, that's not how it turned out to be. I don't know how many times the song rang in my head, each time I would try another inroad, or approach toward wanting. And that's the mystery. How do you find out about how to want when you just . . . don't? That's the mystery dance. The restless dance. The a-typical anti-psychotic jitterbug hop. The hopeless pursuit of remission. But, still, I believe in Joy. That too is, I suppose, the other half of the only dance I can do, the Mystery Dance. (Less)
How to Change the Text on the "Start" button

That's true, it does, and if I ever used that particular function I'd have been aware of the problem. I don't use it, so I wasn't aware, but now you've been warned. As far as I know there are no other caveats associated with the modification. -------------------------- What is Resource HackerTM? Resource HackerTM is a freeware utility to view, modify, rename, add, delete and extract resources in 32bit Windows executables and resource files (*.res). It incorporates an internal resource script compiler and decompiler and works on Win95, Win98, WinME, WinNT, Win2000 and WinXP operating systems. Viewing Resources: Cursor, Icon, Bitmap, GIF, AVI, and JPG resource images can be viewed. WAV and MIDI audio resources can be played. Menus, Dialogs, MessageTables, StringTables, Accelerators, Delphi Forms, and VersionInfo resources can be viewed as decompiled resource scripts. Menus and Dialogs can also be viewed as they would appear in a running application. Saving Resources: Resources can be saved as image files (*.ico, *.bmp etc), as script files (*.rc), as binary resource files (*.res), or as untyped binary files (*.bin). Modifying Resources: Resources can be modified by replacing the resource with a resource located in another file (*.ico, *.bmp, *.res etc) or by using the internal resource script compiler (for menus, dialogs etc). Dialog controls can also be visually moved and/or resized by clicking and dragging the respective dialog controls prior to recompiling with the internal compiler. Adding Resources: Resources can be added to an application by copying them from external resource files (*.res). Deleting Resources: Most compilers add resources into applications which are never used by the application. Removing unused resources can reduce an application's size. ------------------------------- Licence to Use - Terms and Conditions: This Resource HackerTM software is released as freeware provided that you agree to the following terms and conditions: 1. This software is not to be distributed via any website domain or any other media without the prior written approval of the copyright owner. 2. This software is not to be used in any way to illegally modify software. DISCLAIMER: A user of this Resource HackerTM software acknowledges that he or she is receiving this software on an "as is" basis and the user is not relying on the accuracy or functionality of the software for any purpose. The user further acknowledges that any use of this software will be at the user's own risk and the copyright owner accepts no responsibility whatsoever arising from the use or application of the software. The above licence terms constitute "copyright management information" within the meaning of Section 1202 of Title 17 of the United States Code and must not be altered or removed from the licensed works. Their alteration or removal from the licensed works, and the distribution of licensed works without all the above licence terms in an unaltered way, may contravene Section 1202 and give rise civil and/or criminal consequences. ----------------------------- Limitation: Resource HackerTM will not read 16bit (Windows 3.1) executables. Status: I have no intention of supporting these executables - they are a dying breed. The shareware resource editor eXeScope I believe does handle 16bit files. Limitation: Resource HackerTM is currently compiled with Delphi 3.02. When decompiling and recompiling Borland's Delphi forms in applications compiled with later version of Delphi, there may be errors in the recompiled forms if frames have been used to create the form. This error is due to the inline DFM keyword not being recognized. While decompiling, the inline keyword will be replaced by object and, if manually corrected before recompiling, inline will be rejected by the internal compiler. Status: I'm not rushing to make all the changes that are necessary to recompile Resource HackerTM with the latest version of Delphi. Limitation: To reduce the size of application files, some applications are "packed" or "compressed" using an EXE compressor once they have been compiled. This has a side-effect of making it more difficult to view and modify resources. When a "compressed" executable is viewed with Resource HackerTM, only resource types and names will be visible but not the actual resources. Status: This is not viewed as a bug. The application developer may well have viewed this as beneficial feature so no "fix" is planned. (Less)
