Audiosurf - This Could Be Anywhere in The World

This video shows me playing This Could Be Anywhere in The World by Alexisonfire, in the beta build of the PC indie game, Audiosurf. A bit of tinkering is needed to get the game to play offline as I did - a quick google search should tell you what to do. A bit of briefing on Audiosurf: Audiosurf is a sort of cross between Tetris, Guitar Hero, and a racing game or roller coaster. The main object of the game is to place your "ship" (that thing moving at the bottom) over incoming "cars" (those rectangular things that act like Guitar Hero notes) to form a series of 3 or more cars of the same color. Diagonals do not count. Bigger car clusters give you more points. Overloading a column with too many cars will cause you to start flashing for about 5 seconds (and lose a fair number of points), during which you can't hit any cars that come flying by (precious time wasted when trying to beat highscores). In this particular mode, Mono (the easiest), you must dodge the gray cars and hit the colored ones. By far the most unique thing about Audiosurf is that there is no set list of playable tracks, unlike games such as Guitar Hero and Rock Band. You can load up ANY song, and the game will analyze the intensity, beat and speed of the song, and make a custom road for you to follow. Want a high-paced experience? Choose a fast, intense song. Want a relaxing session? Choose a slow, calm song. It's up to you. With that out of the way, here are some things you should look out for in the video: - Watch how the background graphics mesh with the song. These are not random. Certain objects will pulsate along with the bass or drums in a song, and there will be explosions of color and shapes during intense moments in a song (this is only Enhanced graphics - I had to refrain from using Premium graphics to keep the frame rate up while recording - so, yes, it can get even better). - Look at how the road curves. Again, not random. The more intense a song section, the steeper you will be going. During slower parts of a song, you'll be going uphill. - The speed and traffic density depends on how intense a song moment is. The more intense, the faster you go, and the more cars there are. Watch how everything seems to be going in slow-motion when the song slows to a crawl, then picks up the pace as it speeds up. - The cars arrive in time with the beat. All this is determined by Audiosurf, which will analyze your selected song and sets all the details. I decided to use This Could Be Anywhere in The World since it combines calm and intense moments, to show what it's like. Try playing songs when all the instruments will stop playing for one or two seconds - I guarantee you'll love the slow motion effect as much as I do. (Please forgive the slightly occasional dip in frame rate - playing a high-effects game and recording with Fraps at the same time makes it pretty much impossible to get a smooth, consistent frame rate.)
