gEarth Environmental Rating System - Google 10 to the 100th Contest submission Google 10 to the 100th Contest submission.
We give consumers worldwide the power to control the (More) Google 10 to the 100th Contest submission.
We give consumers worldwide the power to control the use of our Earth's natural resources.
Today: As consumers and world citizens, we are all concerned about the clear limitations of our Earths natural resources. But we have no way of controlling the corporations and manufacturing processes and products that we consume in our everyday life. Rating systems that exist today, like Energy Star, or Organic labels, give very limited or incomplete pictures of the actual greenness of the products we see on store shelves and on the Internet.
Tomorrow: Googles gEarth comprehensive Environmental Rating System (ERS) will allow consumers to make informed environmental decisions about the products they buy and support, and vote with their wallets and purses. Companies that have committed to branding themselves as environmentally responsible will want to include gEarths ERS labeling on their packaging, thereby encouraging other companies in the same markets to improve their own products to have a competitive ERS. gEarth labels will provide a clear, simple rating of the products overall environmental impact. This rating will give the consumer the power to make an informed decision between similar products. Demand will drive corporate and manufacturing change for our childrens future.
The rating system would range from 0-100, 100 being the highest. In order to collect vast amounts of data about thousands of popular products, Google would host a website, similar to Wikipedia, that allows users and schoolchildren worldwide to input data about a given products carbon footprint. Logarithmic equations will calculate a single rating number based on all responses for that product. Factors which will create the ERS for each product would include: manufacturing processes and materials, transportation and packaging efficiency, recyclability, recycled content, durability, and whether the company participates in carbon credit programs. Companies can license their ERS average number for a calendar year for inclusion in their advertising and packaging.
Within 2 years, thousands of products would have a gEarth rating. Companies that have positioned themselves as earth-conscious and have high gEarth ratings will affix gEarth ratings to their products. Other companies will race to compete with this new third prism of Environmental Value. Schoolchildren all over the world will have learned all about the actual cost of their mp3 player or the package of cookies in their lunch. Adult consumers will be able to make their everyday buying decisions with a clear conscience and enlightenment as to the true carbon footprint of their purchases. Within 4 years, your neighborhood grocery store will be lined with products and packaging that include gEarths label. In 10 years, we will be able to see what makes more sense: building with concrete versus steel, or a new regional airport versus a new rail system. Now is the time. (Less)
