Dino Coffee House - The Galloway School The lights have been dimmed to a mellow gold. The crowded classroom smells like coffee and hot (More) The lights have been dimmed to a mellow gold. The crowded classroom smells like coffee and hot chocolate as the students and parents lounge about on chairs and on the floor, listening to poetry. There is a small mountain of muffins on the back table. Welcome to The Dino Coffee House, presented by the seven-, eight- and nine-year old students from The Galloway School. To get the guests in the mood, the students have drawn small dinosaurs on the white board, and the floor is covered with paper mache dinosaurs.
Over the course of the show, every student reads the two poems they wrote about dinosaurs. This performance is the culmination of their study of dinosaurs. As part of their dinosaur unit, each student investigates one particular dinosaur in depth and writes a research report about it. Upon finishing this report, they write one poem about this dinosaur, including in it some of the facts they learned, and they also write another free choice poem about anything dino-relevant.
At first glance, The Dino Coffee House project seems to be an entertaining affair that lets the students show their parents and peers what they have learned. While it accomplishes this end, the project also incorporates many other educational goals. First, it provides an introduction to their study of poetry. The class explores different styles of poetry, how to read poems, and how to write poems. The project connects to their study of art with the paper mache dinosaurs that they build and paint. The students also hone their computer skills by typing their own poems on the computer, and they incorporate dinosaurs into their Spanish studies. The children must also host the event; they introduce the performance, they read in front of a large group, they respect each other by listening quietly, and they even serve their parents coffee and breakfast after the performance is over. The muffins turn out to be delicious. (Less)
Student Demonstration Project 0809- Fire Writing In the 2007-2008 school year I created a quarter project for my chemistry students where they had to (More) In the 2007-2008 school year I created a quarter project for my chemistry students where they had to research and present a chemical demonstration. I did this for several reasons: first it got me both a lab-type and partner opportunity in one project, next it gave the students and me a chance to see some demonstrations that don't really fit into the curriculum, and finally I wanted them to better appreciate the work that I personally put into doing my demonstrations. Overall the project was a success and we all enjoyed the new demonstrations. The project has been slightly modified, but has become a permanent part of my curriculum (these videos are from the 08-09 school year).
In these videos I've tried my best to film the performance of the demonstration. The explanation of it was given by the students to their peers in a lecture format as a part of the project, but has not been filmed. I will do my best to explain briefly how the demonstration works, but feel free to ask questions.
In this demonstration a student attempts to burn the trail on a chemical soaked paper, but the demonstration goes foul. (Less)
