Here I am emerging from a moon crater, on my longest trip yet. Gosh it's dark down there, full of coal dust. The guy next to me is called Frank. I had to tell him "Sorry Frank we don't need you now, we've got Agnetha!" He wasn't too pleased. Agnetha's fear of flying arose from a bad experience during Abba's 1979 USA tour. On October 3 their hired Lear Jet took off from New York in bad weather for Boston. The plane was tossed around violently in a raging storm, and Agnetha became distressed. Boston airport was closed and the plane had to land at Machester, 100 miles away. Abba were driven to the Boston Music Hall by van, and the show began 2 hours late. Although Agnetha was feeling weak and ill, she still managed to sing. During the night her health worsened - she had a temperature, started vomiting and was suffering from violent stomach pains. The doctor diagnosed the onset of a virus caused by stress and recent gastric problems. Agnetha was unable to sing and the final concert of the US tour in Washington DC had to be cancelled. Stig prepared a radio announcement, and the 6000 ticket holders were reimbursed. Agnetha recovered and showed her Super Trouper spirit by completing the Canadian concerts, which began in Montreal just 2 days later on October 6th. Agnetha recalls "When I walked out on stage I wasn't sure if I'd be able to last until the end of the show. My legs were trembling. And then we had the best audience of this tour. So everything became easier for me." After this bad experience Agnetha loved to travel as much as possible by bus or boat. But there was still one more traumatic travel mishap to befall her. On her way back home in Sweden in late 1983, the bus she was in turned over after the driver lost control. Agnetha was thrown from the back into a ditch. Agnetha was hospitalised overnight after receiving treatment for shock, cuts and bruises. This experience re-inforced her dislike of travelling. It's perhaps not surprising that she now prefers a tranquil quiet life at home with her family, away from the show business atmosphere. From album My Colouring Book (2004).
