A Piece of Infinity
The band Everything made their most recent album the same way they started out recording-- everyone (More) The band Everything made their most recent album the same way they started out recording-- everyone in the same room with the record button glowing red. Despite this humble beginning, (or more likely because of it), the album “In the Juju Underworld” has done better for them than 1998’s “SuperNatural” with it’s hit song “Hooch”. Duly inspired to continue on this path and make a video for art’s sake, Everything enlisted Jamie Sides-- cinematographer and long time friend. The first time he heard the song “I’ll Get Back to You”, Jamie saw it: “We see her from above, float down to her with a jib shot, profile kiss, jib out. These are the bookends.” Once he explained what that actually meant, the band loved it. From those key elements, it was just a matter of filling in the story. Jamie, and Everything’s Steve Van Dam began fleshing out the details. Film maker Janine Sides (USC Film School grad student and Jamie’s sister), joined the team to help produce and direct. Together they all wanted to push the boundaries of a traditional music video in order to tell a story that could stand on its own-- the day a woman comes to grip with her reality and finds hope. Early tests and consultations with the film’s editor Glenn Walton (also a long time friend), determined the technical direction. Once they got to the logistics of shooting, other story details arranged themselves. Janine wanted to shoot at a military installation, so that determined a key facet of Spencer Mickelson’s “Dave” character. As fate would have it, Spencer had a shaved head when cast, and then longer hair a year later when they were filming flashbacks, so that worked perfectly. Almost as if planned. Whereas Margaret Owens (“Victoria”), kept the same hairstyle for almost 18 months of shooting. That’s dedication. As happens with modern film making, editing was a crucial part of the story telling process, and it really enabled the creative team at this point (Steve, Glenn, Janine and Jamie) to focus the story. Hours of discussions, some quite heated, were moderated by the ever calm and steady Walton. Kudos to his technical skills and artistic touch, as well as his patience, and willingness to let us test our opposing theories and then find the beauty in the balance.
