They'd made arrangements during an online chat Friday night to go dirt bike riding Saturday afternoon with Jake Gilbertson, the 13-year-old son of fellow NHRA driver Bob Gilbertson of Gastonia.
But first that morning the two sons of Top Fuel driver Doug Herbert would make a run to
McDonald's for breakfast, their father said Sunday.
And then in as fast as it takes for a car wreck to happen, two young lives ended.
"I've told all my friends that have kids to never take them for granted because you never know how long you're going to have them," Herbert said Sunday.
"You just have to hug them and tell them every chance that you get that you love them."
Herbert, 40, was in the Phoenix area Saturday testing his Snap-on Tools dragster in preparation for the start of the National Hot Rod Association season next week.
He described the pain he and his former wife, Sonnie, feel as "unimaginable."
Jon, who would've turned 18 Saturday, was a senior at SouthLake Christian Academy, while his brother was a seventh-grader at the private school in Huntersville.
Jon loved cars, but had less of an interest in racing, instead focusing more on music and being a good student, his father said.
James was an avid motocross racer and participated in Junior Dragster.
"They're good boys," Herbert said. "They had big hearts and they cared a lot about people."
Both Jon and James had spent time in the cockpit of their father's 8,000-horsepower dragster, helping guide it back to the pits after runs at National Hot Rod Association events over the years.
Herbert said police had not told him much about the two-vehicle wreck.
Cornelius Police have released few details, including the names of the two people in the other vehicle, a 2004 Hummer H2.
The adult male driver of the Hummer was taken by air to Carolinas Medical Center. His passenger, a 12-year-old girl, went to the hospital by ambulance.
The 10:10 a.m. wreck occurred about one-half mile from the Lake Norman home of Jon and James' mother, Herbert said.
Apparently Jon was trying to pass another vehicle against the flow of traffic in his 2008 Mazda3 when he hit the oncoming Hummer head-on, according to Herbert and police.
Cornelius Police indicate the department does not intend to release any other details about the wreck until after the completion of an accident reconstruction, which could take up to six weeks.
Herbert, who tied a career best with a sixth place finish last season, found it hard to believe that it would be his two sons that would die before him.
His dragster goes 330 mph, he rides a motorcycle, he pilots airplanes, he said.
"Luckily, the last time I talked to Jon and James they both told me that they loved me," he said.

Statement from Doug Herbert and Sonnie Herbert on the death of their two sons, Jon and James
Our kids have always been our best friends and the bond between the two of us. As you can imagine, the loss we are both feeling for Jon and James at the moment is unimaginable.
As brothers, they were always together and were each other's best friend.
Jon loved music and cars. He was a dreamer, happy, peaceful and was most pleased when everyone got along.
James loved to skateboard and ride dirt bikes, but he had the kindest heart and was compassionate to all.
Our very special boys also loved their little sister, Jessie, who already misses her big brothers.
Our family is deeply grateful for the wishes and prayers from our friends, the community and the boy's classmates at SouthLake Christian Academy.
Our boys would not like everyone to be upset and cry right now, so please smile when you think of them.
Thank you for keeping Jon, James, Jessie and our entire family in your prayers as we work through this time of sorrow.
Funeral services for the James and Jon Herbert will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at SouthLake
Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Community Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Raymer Funeral Home, Huntersville. (Less)
