Huaixiu Li & Huaifu Li(Yi, Gold Medal) - The Tune of Missing English lyrics translated from Yi language: The brother I am longing for, where are you? (Brother or (More) English lyrics translated from Yi language: The brother I am longing for, where are you? (Brother or Sister in Chinese has another meaning: dear honey or dear lover). Your sister is missing you! The sister I am missing, I am in the bamboo grove. I am also missing you! Carrying Si-Xian Pipa, I climb up the mountain. However, I do not find where you are. I am missing you but cannot find you. I am afraid that you are sick. If you want to see me, then climb up the mountain and sing folk songs with me. It will be enjoyable to be with you. We will sing dialogic songs and dance with the tunes of Si-Xian Pipa. Our songs will fill the whole mountain side. Our songs will be so attractive to the Moon that it does not want to return home. Not return home, and not return home! -------------------------------------- Flying up Goldfinch - The "Chinese Folk Song King" Hauxiu Li Huaixiu Li is an ethnic Yi Chinese singer. She was born in Yunnan Province of China. Her parents are poor peasants in a small village. The Yi people like to use songs and dances to express their feelings. Huaixiu Li learned many songs from her mother in her childhood. When Huaixiu Li was 16 years old in 1993, a famous Chinese musician, Feng Tian (田丰), went to her hometown to recruit students. Recommended by the local officials, Huaixiu Li was admitted by Feng Tian's private school. Huaixiu's mother encouraged her to take some professional training. She asked Huaixiu to sing for all the ethnic Yi people, and to show the most beautiful Yi culture to the outside world. Huaixiu Li was invited to attend the "West China Folk Song Contest" in 2003. Her song entitled "Haicai Tune" won her the gold medal. Huaixiu Li attended the 11th National Youth Singing Contest in 2004. Her song entitled "Flying Up Goldfinch & Silverfinch" shocked all the audience. The goldfinch in deep mountains of Yunnan Province really flied up and flied to thousands of families. Her performance was so impressive that a notoriously picky referee gave her the highest grade. However, some musicians argued that her singing technique could not be classified into any of three singing forms recognized by the National Singing Contest: Bel Canto, Pop Singing, and Folk Singing. Unfortunately, Huaixiu Li did not get any medal in the 11th National Singing Contest in 2004. Also in 2004, Huaixiu Li attended the "North China and South China Folk Songs Contest". Again, her prolonged, high-pitched, clear, fluid and melodious voice won her the title "Chinese Folk Song King". In 2005, she performed her ethnic Yi folk song at the Chinese Lunar New Year Tea Party for high-ranking Chinese officials. After her performance, the Chinese president, Jintao Hu, praised her and encouraged her to continue to show to the world the unique style of Yi folk songs. Huaixiu Li uses Haicai Tune(海菜腔), a typical ethnic Yi singing technique, in her performance. This singing technique was so beautiful that its value goes beyond the enjoyable feeling to listeners. It motivated a hot discussion among Chinese folk song professionals and music producers. Kun Wang (王昆), a famous Chinese musician and singer, criticized some referees of the National Singing Contest to be "narrow-sighted". "They dared not accept new things. They simply rejected true arts that are different from theirs. They should learn how to appreciate the diversity and the real beauty!" China has a long history of folk songs and folk arts. The diversified culture of 56 Chinese ethnic groups gestates surprisingly abundant folk arts. However, with the modernization of the Chinese society, more and more people especially ethnic minorities are getting richer and richer. Since they changed their living styles, many folk songs started to fade and are dying. The United Nations Educational has urged China to protect and save the west China folk song art. In recent years, more and more Chinese musicians started to realize the value and the beauty of the Chinese folk song art. A turning point occured in 2006, when the National Singing Contest recognized the Aboriginal Singing (or Natural Singing, Primitive Singing) as a formal singing style. Huaixiu Li and her youger brother Huaifu Li won the gold medal in 2006. Their teacher - Feng Tian said that the performance of Huaixiu and Huaifu is so fabulous that the historian of music will write it down as a special case in the Chinese music history. 李怀秀、李怀福 - 思念调 十二届CCTV青年歌手电视大奖赛 李懷秀、李懷福 - 思念調 十二屆CCTV青年歌手電視大獎賽 Huaixiu Li & Huaifu Li's Homepage at CCTV.com http://www.cctv.com/qgds/qingge/14/29/05/index.shtml The "most beautiful Yi girl" Mahei Ayi http://big5.china.com.cn/info/txt/2007-07/27/content_8589145.htm Beautiful ethnic Yi costumes http://lbxld.lsz.gov.cn/show.aspx?id=1178&cid=9 (Less)
