See here after the Charlie Wilson's war in the latest UK Top 10 Weekend on Friday 18 - Sunday 20 January 2008.
Mike Nichols, an eight-time Tony Award winner (most recently for Spamalot), directed the feature film Charlie Wilson's War starring Tom Hanks, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Julia Roberts and Amy Adams. He also made The Graduate and Catch 22. Mike Nichols' geopolitical comedy tells the true story of a dissolute Texas congressman who, in the 1980s, takes on as a personal crusade aiding the Afghan resistance to Soviet occupation. Aaron Sorkin's funny, fast-paced script provides a wonderful platform for Tom Hanks as the bibulous Wilson, Julia Roberts as his sultry right-wing benefactress and Philip Seymour Hoffman as his man in the CIA.
So the Film tells the remarkable true-life tale of how Wilson played a key role in the outcome of the Afghan war of 1979-89, pushing US funding for the Afghan resistance from $5m to $1bn a year and facilitating a morale-crushing defeat for the Soviet Union.
The Film is top 10 at Box offices and has already grossed no less than $40m in the US since its release on December 21 , and at least till january 14.
Tom Hanks says: "Wilson may have lived his life in a certain way, but to give him his due, he severed the Achilles' heel of the Soviet Union,". "It was just nine months after they pulled out of Afghanistan that the Berlin wall came down. And one of the reasons it fell was that the Soviet government knew that the cream of its armed forces had been decimated by a bunch of people in a place called Afghanistan. That meant they couldn't defend their borders in East Germany and Poland. That has Charlie Wilson all over it."
Stars also includes Philip Seymour Hoffman and Julia Roberts, and amy Adams...
One important aspect of the film are the funds and technology that were required to neuter the Soviet assault, but it is neither war movie nor political allegory. Tom Hanks says: "You can be sure there will be editorials written blaming Charlie Wilson for the war in Iraq,". "People will be saying, 'Well, if Charlie didn't arm the Mujahidin we wouldn't have al-Qaeda -- that's horseshit!".
While recent politically minded movies such as Lions for Lambs struggled at the box office, Charlie Wilson's War is simply sophisticated and good entertainment, though the subject is very deep and serious. There is a glamorous dimension added to it Thanks to Tom Hanks outstanding performance. The film has already been nominated for five Golden Globes, and its Best Picture nod comes in the comedy or even in the musical category...

The only man other than Humphrey Bogart (More) London: 9 January 2008

The only man other than Humphrey Bogart to win back to back Oscars - Tom Hanks proved that premieres are much like a box of chocolates - you don't quite know what you're gonna get - as Forest Gump might say. It was a chill and rain-free evening as the fans felt the buzz of anticipation about Tom's appearance tonight; would he sign and pose? - he's notably frugal with the autographs. He did sign some, yet only a few - my friend in the fanline missed out because a professional hunter got his picture in front lightning quick. Director Mike Nichols signed with the fans and remarked the cancelled Golden Globes meant he was a double winner because not only would he be spared the pain of attending, any award would be delivered in the mail! Also there was Tara Palmer-Tomkinson who's always happy to spend time with the folks who travelled from as far as New York and Berlin to be here.
