Ah, Onimusha. I have to be honest, the only reason I bought this game years ago is because I saw a demo movie of Onimusha 2, and it looked pretty damn badass, so I figured I'd buy the first and second one and play it. Well, it's not a horrible game, but it has some pretty noticable flaws. Either way, this is the final boss in the game (personally I find the fight before it harder).
The easy way out would be to get the ultimate weapon (forgot name of it) and take it down in like 20 hits. But of course that would be no fun, the game already has a lack of boss fights. So I went in as soon as I got to the final area, without maxed weapons or the ultimate weapon. The boss is generally pretty easy. You'll probably beat it the second time after you die the first time learning its moves. It hits hard, but most of its moves are easily avoidable. Only one move is able to be blocked it seems. The strat is basically keep switching swords to use your magic attacks. When you run out of MP for that weapon, switch to another. By the time you run out of MP on all of your weapons, the first weapon should have some MP again (assuming you've been sucking in souls). If not, whip out the Matchlock gun and shoot it as much as you want, or until you run out of bullets. Use healing items as needed (you should have at least two).
The worst move is its laser. It's hard to dodge with the controls (read more on that next). The best way I could come up with is to immediately face left or right when you see him about to do it and then press Up to move forward as the laser comes, and then press Down to move backwards just in case it shoots more lasers.
But anyway, the BIGGEST flaw of the game is the controls. If you've played Resident Evil, you'll know how this can be. Capcom felt they're too good for analog stick compatibility, so they decided to use the D-pad for movement. What in the HELL were they thinking? This is a next generation game, there's no excuse for not giving it Analog support. Here's how you move Sam, Up moves you forward, no matter what way you're facing. Down moves you backwards. Left TURNS you left, you do not move. Right turns you right. Seriously, can you imagine how difficult it is to turn 90 degrees in the heat of battle? How about to move 90 degrees just to back up or move forward? You have to hold left/right down, then wait for the slow moving warrior to finish turning and then attempt to move forward or backward. By the time you accomplish that, you're getting slashed in the side or back by the enemy that probably founds its way around you. So yea, biggest flaw is clunky controls. They're fine if the enemy is in front of you, but most boss fights require you to have tricky movements for their unblockable moves. The only good thing about the final boss for controls is that the final boss doesn't move, as well as the camera does not.
The only other HUGE flaw is the English voice acting. If I'd had known it was this bad, I'd have switched the voices to Japanese with English subs. The voice actor of the god damn main character sounds like a lifeless shell from a guy that was just reading from a piece of paper. Not to mention there was obviously no dubbing effort put in for the mouth movements. I seriously don't think Capcom put any effort into dubbing it at all.
But the good parts of the game is the battles. When you're one vs one against an enemy, it's fun. You can pull off combos, own them with magic, or pull out your gun or bow and shoot them in the face. It's a rather short game, it'll take you less than 5 hours unless you get lost (and the world is even rather small, as you keep backtracking all over the places to go into doors you weren't able to get in before). There's only a small handful of bosses, maybe 5-6ish. There's tons of normal enemies to beat up though. The only thing that can make this game hard is if you run out of HP, you get a game over. Sound standard, right? Well, there's no way to restore your HP during the entire game without a healing item, and healing items are limited. You CAN get healing orbs from killing enemies, but they're not that common and you'll probably lose HP trying to restore it because of the horrid control and block system.
Okay, maybe there was more wrong with the game than just those two big flaws. But it kept me playing until the end. Perhaps if they implemented Analog support I'd have thought it a better game. But by a games standards for PS2 I'd say it's OKAY. You do tend to get used to the crappy controls eventually (though sometimes they still get in your way of fighting as you can see in the video), and you can always change the voice acting to Japanese.
